Motion of a Single Hailstone / B.Ya. Lokshin // Vestn. Mosk. Univ., Matem. Mekhan. 2009. № 3. P. 62-67 [Moscow Univ. Mech. Bulletin. Vol. 64, No 3, 2009. P. 70-74]
A vertical motion (up and down) of a single hailstone in an upward flow of supercooled air is studied with consideration of hailstone mass changes. A mathematical model is proposed on the basis of theoretical and experimental data on the process of hailstone growth. This model is used to estimate the lift height of the hailstone, its maximum size, the time of its upward motion, and the time of its return to the initial height. Simple formulas are derived to approximately calculate these characteristics.
